Since the beginning of July, there are stakes races every Sunday at the 3R Hippodrome. It’s the first weekend of stakes-free events, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t stories about the excellent racing map.
A classic battle will take place in the ninth Preferred-Handicap Pace race for fillies and mares.
There is only one filly in the peloton, Control The Moment’s three-year-old daughter Platinum Alpha (Post 6), who is no stranger to competing against the best mares at 3R.
She ran well last week against the best in her $ 60,000 Breeders Trophy Series final, and finished in a solid third place for regular reintendent Pascal Berube. Prior to this start, Platinum Alpha was tested at both Woodbine Mohawk Park and Rideau Carleton Raceway in the Ontario Sires Stakes Gold and an overnight event, and finished fifth in both events.
Platinum Alpha is also tied with another filly, the XOXO Trotter, as the two most winning horses at 3R this season, each with seven wins on the half-mile oval.
Bred, owned and trained by Sylvain Tremblay and his Alpha team from Metabechouan, Platinum Alpha had several of her seven wins against older horses at 3R earlier this season and is the 3-1 second choice in the main race. His trainer is at the top of the standings at 3R with 25 wins for his team with Francis Richard second with 18 wins and Maxime Velaye third with 17 wins.
But there are eight other rivals in the race and the star of the older mares is none other than Kiss Me Bad, who will be after his fourth straight win in this class for owner, trainer and pilot Steven Gagnon of Sorel Tracy.
This five-year-old mare by Badlands Hanover has been exceptional lately for Gagnon, and is handicapped with the outside post eight on Sunday. She started from that position on her last start at 3R and has always won easily in 1:57, while tying her lifetime mark of 1:56 at the previous start.
Kiss Me Bad doesn’t have a lot of starting capacity, but once Gagnon got her going in the home stretch, she’s been unbeatable in her last three starts.
Other stars on the pitch include Fancy Girl (Post 2), who returns after a month off and was very strong before taking the hiatus. It will be led by Francis Picard. Wild River Swan (Post 5) is another top mare returning from a brief layoff and she will feature the return of driver Pierre Luc Roy to the 3R driving colony.
YC Easy (Post 7) with Steeve Genois at the wheel and Sophies Cam (Post 4) for the driver Stéphane Brosseau are also in contention in the race.
There are 11 races on the Sunday 3R harness races, with a first shift time at 12:10 pm. A free racing program is available at hippodrome3r.ca. To consult the registrations for the Sunday card, click on the following link: Sunday registrations – Hippodrome 3R.
