Battlefield 2042’s map design philosophy focuses on larger maps with smaller internal slots.
In a segment, during Xbox Extended Event (Going through MP1er) DICE explained that while its maximum number of players is doubling, the game design solution isn’t just about making bigger and bigger maps. Daniel Berlin, game design director said:
“We’ve changed the way we deal with the design of the levels because it wasn’t as simple as making it bigger and distributing the slots, it doesn’t really work that way. So we relied on a new type of design mindset which we call “bundling”.
“Now what regrouping means is that you will have a huge battlefield in front of you, but within this huge battlefield you have groups of particular objectives. “
Berlin then discusses the “Hourglass” card that takes place in Doha, Qatar. Although he refuses to explain the specific size of the map, he does note that it is one of the largest in the game.
However, it highlights the sub-locations. To the south, there is a “fully destructible village”. To the east there are Skyscappers where you can enter and zip line for those who are not afraid of heights. Then, even further east is a stadium, which offers much closer combat.
Berlin also mentions that if the players want to capture, say, the entire stadium, there will be multiple points inside. Controlling everything will take a coordinated team effort.
All of this before even considering the map-changing power of the tornado and sandstorms that may appear, which, it is noted, are not pre-scripted.
In many ways, these design philosophies aren’t entirely different from how some battle royale maps are created. These maps seem designed to be more than one area and have multiple levels of battlegrounds within a larger map. It’s good that the game doesn’t have a battle royale planned.
However, with the massive 128-player battle, that makes sense. Battlefield 2042 matches will have as many players as most battle royale games. They will just be team and goal based to deal with the feeling of war, rather than being reduced to just one player.
