It’s been four years since three friends took the risk and took over ownership of a cupcake shop in downtown Greenville. Around this time, Emily Copp, Anne Marie O’Hara and Elizabeth Gibbs became The Bakery & Café Chocolate Moose into a popular destination not only for cupcakes, but also for cookies, wine, coffee and food.

But the coronavirus changed all that, and now, five months after weathering the storm the pandemic has wrought against everyone, but especially against small businesses, the three owners have decided to shut down their store.

The Chocolate Moose will serve customers until August 29. Mr. Judson, where the bakery is located, remains open.

“For us, it’s been five months of trying to reinvent our business every day, every week, every month and finally realizing and making the call that it’s not going to be sustainable,” said Emily Copp, s’ voicing over the phone right after the owners. posted the closing announcement on their social media.

When the coronavirus hit, The Chocolate Moose was having the best sales in January and February since Copp, O’Hara and Gibbs took over in March 2016.

They weathered the storm as best they could, Copp said. They added online orders, worked on promotions, and made cupcake kits. They successfully got a PPP loan which helped.

But after months of trying to reinvent the day-to-day business, and the already slim margins of food companies, and no real positive change on the horizon, the three owners have decided to move on.

Even so, they feel successful, Copp said.

“I think success isn’t just about sales,” Copp said. “And while we have been successful in our sales, we also believe that we have been more successful than we started. We had a broader reach and positive relationships with current and former employees, and we learned a lot, good and bad.

“The lessons learned have always led us to a better place. “

The Chocolate Moose Café will be open until August 29 at 130 S. Main St., Greenville.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; closed Sunday and Monday.
