welcome to Watches of the week, where we’ll follow the rarest, craziest and most coveted watches spotted on celebrities.
A few weeks ago, an interview with Diddy surfaced in which the rapper eviscerates Richard Mille. “I’m not an enemy though, I’m a fly shit connoisseur,” he said, before saying exactly what an enemy would say. “I’m just telling you, you all get fooled by the Richard Mille, the Richard Mille is like a Timex or shit like that.” He goes on to describe Richard Mille watches as “ugly”. (Diddy, is that you?) It started a miniature civil war in the world of watchmaking. Jeweler Alex Todd has said on Instagram that he is a willing buyer for all of the unloved Richard Mille watches, including Diddy’s. Todd then pointedly shared an image of the custom blue sapphire watch he made for Jay-Z, the one with a case that took 3,000 hours to assemble and reportedly cost $ 2.5 million. Todd wasn’t the only one siding with Richard Mille on this one, either. Shortly after Diddy’s comments widened, Jay-Z casually wore the sapphire watch in New York City. Coincidence? I do not think so.
Jay-Z’s Richard Mille RM 56 personalization
When Jay first wore the watch known as The Blueprint in the spring of 2019, Todd called it “the most expensive RM ever.” This was probably still the case until at least a few months ago, when Hov wore another Richard Mille personalized sapphire, this time with a green case. The watch also comes with a glossy panda and bamboo rod inside the dial. (Todd said Complex the retail price of this piece is $ 3 million.) So the next time someone gives you the chance to dine with Jay-Z or one of his personalized Richard Mille watches… grab the watch.
Jonah Hill Richard Mille RM 52-01 Skull Tourbillon accessory
Speaking of Richard Mille’s unique pieces: in the trailer for the upcoming star-studded movie Do not seek, Jonah Hill’s character wears a fake version of the RM 52-01 Skull Tourbillon in the trailer. Hill appears to play a prominent political figure in the film and wrote on Instagram that he developed his character imagining, “What if Fyre Festival was a person and that person had power in the White House?” This watch fits that description. The six-figure coin adored by celebrities like Post Malone and Pharrell is the type a politician could only afford if, say, they used their inside information to gamble on the stock market. Can you imagine something so despicable?
Michael Jordan’s Urwerk UR-210
His Airness becomes something like the Patron Saint of Greatness. If you were extraordinary in your particular sport, he will show up to celebrate you while wearing a spectacular watch. He did so at the NBA Hall of Fame ceremony in May, and this weekend he crashed in Cooperstown to witness Derek Jeter’s induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. These are the new rules. This time around Jordan has traded his Rolex for one of his funky futuristic pieces: Urwerk confirms he’s wearing the UR-210. This puts Jordan’s Urwerks collection at a minimum of five confirmed (and crazy): he also owns the 103, 203, 202S, and UR-220 Falcon Project. That’s certainly a lot of watches from a niche brand that insists on marketing its pieces as devices that rethink the concept of wearer time! He is definitely the GOAT collector… Urwerk.
Cartier Santos by Jake Gyllenhaal
For a guy who claims he doesn’t bathe very often, Gyllenhaal cleans well. Here at the Venice Film Festival, he bravely wears an ivory double-breasted jacket with peak lapels in the pasta capital of the world and his timepiece is also a marvel. The Cartier Santos is a watch that never seems out of place, but this model’s silver dial is particularly prominent on the red carpet.
Usain Bolt Spirit of Big Bang Hublot
Ceramic is perhaps one of the most fashionable materials in watchmaking today (along with bronze), but few brands have been there from the start like Hublot. One of the pillars of the brand is the making of watches from unconventional materials like rubber, sapphire and ceramic. Bolt, who understands the importance of going somewhere first, opted for the brand’s Spirit of Big Bang in white ceramic while in London.
