Ryan Preece is a full-time competitor in the NASCAR Cup Series, but a part-time participant in the Whelen Modified Tour. The driver from Berlin, Connecticut, didn’t win anything in the Cup Series, but Friday night Preece won his third consecutive Whelen Modified Tour event at Richmond, Virginia Speedway.
The winner had a strong closing run in the second half of the 150-lap main event on the three-quarter-mile Richmond Oval. It was his third win at Whelen in just seven outings in 2021. There were plenty of yellow flags in the final laps at Richmond, but Jon McKennedy and Ronnie Williams survived to finish second and third.
Whelen’s points leaders Justin Bonsignore and Patrick Emerling weren’t so lucky. Both fell out of the race early in the race and finished 24th and 25th. Bonsignore maintains a 20-point lead over Emerling with only two races remaining on Whelen’s schedule.
Cup veteran Ryan Newman was fourth, followed by Doug Coby, Kyle Bonsignore, Austin Beers, Andy Jankowiak, Burt Meyers and Woody Pitkat.
